Benkei overview

Benkei Neck Tattoo Designs

Benkei (Musashibō Benkei) as a neckneck wrap covering throat and sides.

Why Benkei works as a neck

Loyalty, martial prowess, unwavering devotion. The ultimate loyal retainer who served his master Yoshitsune unto death.

The story behind the motif

A warrior monk of extraordinary size and strength who collected swords from defeated warriors on Gojo Bridge. After losing to the young Yoshitsune in their legendary duel, Benkei became his most devoted follower. In his final battle, Benkei died standing, his body riddled with arrows, still protecting the bridge to give Yoshitsune time to escape — 'the standing death of Benkei' (Benkei no tachi-ōjō).

Composition notes

For a neck, benkei sits naturally as the focal subject, framed by traditional supporting elements — clouds, waves, wind bars, or seasonal botanicals — that fill the space between major anatomical landmarks. Plan the composition so the motif’s strongest line follows the body’s natural flow (neck wrap covering throat and sides).
