Musashibō Benkei
Loyalty, martial prowess, unwavering devotion. The ultimate loyal retainer who served his master Yoshitsune unto death.
A warrior monk of extraordinary size and strength who collected swords from defeated warriors on Gojo Bridge. After losing to the young Yoshitsune in their legendary duel, Benkei became his most devoted follower. In his final battle, Benkei died standing, his body riddled with arrows, still protecting the bridge to give Yoshitsune time to escape — 'the standing death of Benkei' (Benkei no tachi-ōjō).
The warrior monk renders as a mountain of a man in monk's robes over armour, carrying some of his seven legendary weapons, most iconically at Gojo Bridge. His head is shaved or wrapped in a monk's cowl, face carved with stubborn devotion. Treatments contrast robe black with armour texture and the naginata's clean line. Black-and-grey suits him — he's a figure of loyalty and grit rather than splendour, and the muted treatment matches the register.
Benkei anchors large vertical spaces: a full outer thigh, a back panel, the standing-guard placement on the rear calf (his famous standing death makes calf placement a deliberate reference wearers enjoy). Bridge architecture, moonlight and rain give him context; the Ushiwakamaru duel adds a second, agile figure leaping above him for narrative suits. He reads as the loyal retainer archetype — wearers often choose him to honour service, duty or a mentor.
Direction: Often shown in the standing death pose, bristling with arrows but unbowed, or dueling on Gojo Bridge.
