Meaning & Symbolism
Power, life force, and constant change. Water purifies and adapts — it yields to everything yet wears down stone. In irezumi it is the single most common background, carrying the suit's movement across the body.
The Story
The wave vocabulary of irezumi descends directly from ukiyo-e — Hokusai's Great Wave is the famous cousin of every tattooed swell. Traditional artists render water as hōsho-nami, the 'finger waves': parallel curling ridges with clawed whitecaps that read clearly on skin at any distance and still flow when the body moves.
