Minamoto no Yorimitsu / Raikō
Heroism, demon slaying, martial excellence. One of the greatest warriors in Japanese legend.
Historical 10th-century nobleman who became legendary as a demon slayer. His most famous exploits include slaying the Shuten-doji (drunken demon) of Mt. Ooe with his retainers, and shooting down the Nue with an arrow guided by prayer. Commands the famous Shitennō (four heavenly retainers).
Raikō appears in full Heian armour, and the armour is the treatment: lacquered plate rows (kozane) rendered scale by scale, silk cords, a horned helmet — a texture inventory that rewards patient artists. He's usually composed mid-battle against the earth spider or the demon Shuten-dōji, giving the piece a monstrous counterweight. Colour versions run the armour in reds and blacks with gold fittings; black-and-grey treatments let the armour's repetition carry pattern against the demon's chaos.
A narrative motif that needs room for two figures — Raikō and his quarry — so full backpieces, large thigh panels, and generous sleeves are its home. The classic composition places him at the top third, blade drawn, with the spider or demon below and web or storm filling the background. It signals loyalty to warrior virtue and suits wearers building a warrior-themed suit alongside samurai and Benkei figures. Not a motif to miniaturise: under-sized, the armour detail muds instantly.
