Realism aims to render a subject as though it were photographed on the skin — smooth gradients, dramatic depth and lifelike detail. It works in black-and-grey or full colour and is the most technically demanding style.
Designing a half sleeve
A half sleeve covers shoulder to elbow, giving a self-contained canvas with a natural border at the elbow. It centres the design on the most visible part of the arm and is an easy starting point that can later extend to a full sleeve.

Outer shoulder and upper arm are comfortable; the inner arm is more sensitive.

Often one to a few sessions depending on detail.

Realism needs a large, relatively flat canvas so detail and gradients aren't distorted — outer arm, thigh, back and chest are ideal.
