Shōki
Protection against evil and disease, exorcism, scholarly achievement. Shoki wards off demons and pestilence.
A Chinese scholar (Zhong Kui) who committed suicide after being denied his rightful scholarly rank. In death he became a powerful demon slayer. Emperor Xuanzong dreamed of Shoki defeating a demon that had stolen his consort's jade flute, and ordered his image painted as protection.
The demon queller is all beard, glare and blade: a bulky Chinese-robed figure with a two-handed sword, usually mid-stride or mid-swing toward a cowering oni. Ink treatments give him deep red or green robes with black beard-work rendered strand by strand; black-and-grey versions build him from heavy shadow and make the beard and robe folds the texture story. His scowl should be almost comically fierce — the tradition allows Shoki a theatrical energy that pure deities don't get.
Shoki works as a large arm or thigh panel and is a traditional choice for the back of the calf — guarding the wearer's rear. The strongest compositions include his quarry: a small oni fleeing around the limb's curve, turning the placement into a chase that wraps the body. He carries protective symbolism against illness specifically (his origin is a fever dream), which historically made him a choice for parents and survivors. Storm clouds and wind ground him; florals don't.
Direction: Typically shown lunging or striding forward, sword raised to strike a fleeing oni.
